Climb it before the heat comes.

Colombo saves its best for dusk.
When the heat lifts, Galle Face Green fills with kite-sellers and isso vadai carts, the Lotus Tower lights up over the lake, and kottu knives start their clatter along the seafront. Go once with someone who knows which stall to stop at.
Rice, curry and a knife on a griddle.
Sri Lanka eats loud and eats with its hands: string hoppers at breakfast, a rice-and-curry spread at noon, kottu chopped to a rhythm after dark. Book three food hours in Colombo and you will taste more than a week of restaurants gives you.
Leopards and elephants before lunch.
Yala holds one of the densest leopard populations on earth; Udawalawe runs thick with elephants; Minneriya’s dry-season gathering is hundreds at once. All of it is a pre-dawn drive from Colombo and a jeep at first light. Pick your park.
Kandy keeps the island’s heart.
Three hours inland the hills close in and the last royal capital appears around its lake. The Temple of the Tooth guards Buddhism’s most sacred relic; drummers mark the evening puja; the gardens at Peradeniya were planted for kings. Give it a full day and a good guide.
Colombo, and the coast either side.
The Fort for colonial bones and sea wind. Pettah for the market crush. Galle for the ramparts. Negombo for the lagoon and the fish. Bentota once the river opens up.
